Course 2 Family Law for Family Mediators

Whether you are taking this course to meet the accreditation requirements to become a mediator, re-taking it so that you can really hone your learning, or you’re a legal professional who wants an update, you will not be disappointed. Lead trainer Cynthia Nantais will explain the legal system, court structure, parenting laws, how child and spousal support work, the law on property and domestic contracts. Emphasis will be on a practical understanding so that mediators are aware of the law and can more importantly explain it and give some information to clients. The learning environment has numerous opportunities to practice explanations and understanding as well as hands on experience for everyone with Divorcemate itself, and how to use it.
Participants will learn about our legal system, how mediation intersects with it, the laws that apply to family breakdown, and generally about the family justice system in Ontario. It is important that mediators learn about parenting law, child support, spousal support and property division for both married and common-law partners. Participants learn how to continue their learning in law as it is essential that mediators continue their learning on law throughout their career. They are taught how to find the law and what websites are accurate. They also learn how to use the available software programs to help develop support options and property sharing. Family Law lawyers are exempt from this course.
Materials are provided by Dropbox prior to the Course and we really emphasize teaching you how to access the information you need on your own to continue your learning of family law throughout your mediation career.
