Course 6: Simulated Role Play
After completion of the necessary courses for accreditation you will need 100 hours of supervised practical experience within which you will mediate five (5) cases to completion. Recently the Ontario Association for Family Mediation approved a new course that is 80 hours in duration and allows you to obtain up to three (3) completed mediations. The remaining 20 hours are used for your last two cases, which must be in person with families.
It is structured as two separate one week blocks and can be purchased as such. Week One and Week Two are separated unto a three (3) and two (2) day block of time. We offer guaranteed placement in this course to those who have purchased a course package, with the option of either purchasing this course separately or as one course package. For those who have not completed their initial training with us, you can still purchase this course, space permitting.
We have a subsequent application process for the remaining twenty (20) hours and two in person cases. Guaranteed placement will be given to those who completed a course package with us and others will be provided the opportunity if we have space.
The goal of this course is to emulate a traditional internship as closely as possible. We therefore provide the opportunity to observe our Accredited Mediators, including lead trainer Jennifer Suzor, and to then move to co-mediation with our Accredited Mediator coaches, to finally the opportunities to lead your own mediations with the Accredited Mediator coaches there for learning, support and feedback.
The format of this course is broken down into two weeks. The first week will include three (3) days of observation of our lead trainer and other very experienced Accredited Mediators followed by two (2) days of co-mediation with the Accredited Mediator coach. Each group of three will have a different Accredited Mediator coach each day throughout the mediation role playing. This results in an experience even superior to traditional internship because you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of mediators with different styles. The students will also play the part of the clients, which provides a rich learning opportunity. This course also includes very clear feedback from the Accredited Mediator coach, peer reflection, reflection by yourself, debrief, and feedback from the lead trainer on the draft Progress Notes and/or Mediation Reports. In Week Two you will progress to leading your mediations with less co-mediation.
Following completion of this program, the trainee is still required to obtain two mediated agreements with families in approximately twenty hours. As stated above, those who take our course packages will automatically be accepted for this part of the program. We will review applications for remaining spots and/or every effort will be made to connect the trainee with an opportunity to obtain those two cases in their community.
