Course 6: Simulated Role Play
Course Length: 40 hours or 80 hours
After completion of the necessary courses for accreditation you will need 100 hours of supervised practical experience within which you will mediate five (5) cases to completion. The Ontario Association for Family Mediation permits 80 of those hours and up to three (3) cases to be done in a simulated environment.
We offer guaranteed placement in this course to those who have purchased a course package, with the option of either purchasing this course separately or as one course package. For those who have not completed their initial training with us, you can still purchase this course, space permitting.
We have a subsequent application process for the remaining twenty (20) hours and two in person cases. Guaranteed placement will be given to those who completed a course package with us and others will be provided the opportunity if we have space.
The goal of this course is to emulate a traditional internship as closely as possible. The format of this course is broken down into two weeks. The first week will include three (3) days of observation of our lead trainer and other very experienced Accredited Mediators followed by two (2) days of co-mediation with the Accredited Mediator coaches. Each group of three will have a different Accredited Mediator coach each day throughout the mediation role playing. This results in an experience even superior to traditional internship because you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of mediators with different styles. The students will also play the part of the clients, which provides a rich learning opportunity. There is a great deal of learning that takes place in the client role. This course also includes very clear feedback from the Accredited Mediator coach, peer reflection, reflection by yourself, debrief, and feedback from the lead trainer on the draft Progress Notes and/or Mediation Reports. In Week Two you will progress to leading your mediations with less co-mediation.
Following completion of this program, the trainee is still required to obtain two mediated agreements with families in approximately twenty hours. As stated above, those who take our course packages will automatically be accepted for this part of the program. We will review applications for remaining spots and/or every effort will be made to connect the trainee with an opportunity to obtain those two cases in their community.
Each course week is 40 hours, broken into a 3 day and 2 day period. The full two week course can be purchased, or one week at a time, and we have launched a new and affordable payment plan for this format which allows you the flexibility to pay your course in three (3) monthly payments.
The fee for one week is $1,500 plus HST, which can be paid in full or in three (3) monthly payments of $500 plus HST per month. The fee for two weeks is a discounted $2,900 plus HST, which can be paid in full or in three (3) monthly payments of $967 plus HST.
